A cymbidium orchid blooms.

These easy-to-care-for orchids produce exotic and flamboyant displays of long-lasting blooms.

My orchids spend the summer and autumn out in the garden. (They need cool temperatures and good light to encourage blooms). I then bring them indoors to an unheated greenhouse where they will produce their spectacular blooms.

Once a week soak the pots with water and a little orchid feed.

A cacti blooms in my greenhhouse

This tiny little cactus Echinopsis subdenudatus produced two huge blooms! They bloom for about a day and then the flowers start to fade.

Enjoy them while they last!

Amazing little plants. Keep them in a very sunny spot and water well but let them dry out between waterings.

TIME TO PLAN YOUR GARDEN

I recently wrote a short article/add for the Rye News (an online local news website for the town of Rye in East Sussex).

I reflect on the past year, offer a list of "to do'" now jobs in the garden. But more importantly, to take a moment and cast a critical eye over the structure of your garden. Use the winter to tweak bedlines, add borders, create new seating areas etc. The plants are the star of the show but each foundation layer is vital to a successful garden design.
